4. Challenges in Rural Healthcare

While urban healthcare has advanced rapidly, rural India continues to face serious gaps.

📊 According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare:

There is a shortage of sub-health centers, primary health centers, and community health centers. Many primary health centers still operate without doctors, lab technicians, or pharmacists.

⚠️ With nearly 69% of India’s population living in rural areas, these challenges cannot be ignored. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed these weaknesses, highlighting the urgent need for stronger rural healthcare systems.

6. Our Mission

The Vocal Health and Research Association (VHRA) is a legally registered organization under the Companies Act 2013. Its mission is to promote the World Health Organization (WHO) concept of universal health coverage, health promotion, and disease prevention.

In line with this mission, VHRA aims to establish medical centers in rural areas to empower underprivileged communities across India. For example, the association has already launched its first center, “Vocal Swasthya Kendra,” in Garhmukteshwar, Hapur. This facility provides healthcare services to rural populations at minimal or no cost. Consequently, VHRA is steadily working to expand healthcare access to millions of people who are currently deprived of it.

7. A Unique Approach to Healthcare

What makes VHRA unique is its recognition that access to medical services is a basic human right. In addition, the organization believes that vocal health is integral to overall health and well-being. Therefore, VHRA has made it a priority to provide healthcare services that also address the specific vocal health needs of rural populations.

Moreover, this holistic approach ensures that individuals not only receive essential medical care but also benefit from awareness programs, preventive services, and education related to vocal health. As a result, VHRA continues to stand out as an innovative model for rural healthcare delivery in India.

8. Problem Statement — The Rural Healthcare Gap

More than two-thirds of Indians live in villages. Yet, the healthcare facilities in these areas have not shown the same progress as urban centers. The chances of visiting a rural health facility without finding a doctor or health professional are still very high.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the situation has worsened compared to 2005. For instance, Rural Health Statistics (2014) reported a shortfall of 36,346 Sub Health Centers (SCs), 6,700 Primary Health Centers (PHCs), and 2,350 Community Health Centers (CHCs) against the population norm. Moreover, the Rural Health Statistics Bulletin (2014) revealed that 8.89% of PHCs were functioning without a doctor, 39.26% without a lab technician, and 22.94% without a pharmacist. These gaps have left rural populations underserved and vulnerable.

9. Our Role in Empowering Villages

The Vocal Health and Research Association (VHRA) is a legally registered organization under the Companies Act 2013. Its mission is to promote the World Health Organization’s concept of establishing medical centers in rural areas to empower underprivileged communities.

As part of this mission, VHRA launched its first center, “Vocal Swasthya Kendra,” in Garhmukteshwar, Hapur. This facility provides healthcare services to rural populations at minimal or no cost. Through such initiatives, VHRA is working to ensure that millions of people gain access to essential healthcare services they would otherwise be deprived of.

10. The Urgent Need for Change

The lack of rural healthcare facilities has created a major disparity between urban and rural health outcomes. People in villages remain more vulnerable to diseases due to poor sanitation, lack of clean drinking water, and malnutrition. Furthermore, the shortage of medical professionals has resulted in limited awareness of preventive healthcare. Consequently, preventable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and diarrhea continue to claim thousands of lives each year.

To address this crisis, the government has launched initiatives such as the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and Ayushman Bharat. However, despite these efforts, the gap between rural and urban healthcare remains wide. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize investments in rural healthcare infrastructure, train medical professionals, and strengthen preventive health programs. Only then can India ensure equal access to quality healthcare for all.
